š„ What Is Burnout?
For Autistic, ADHD, and Neurodivergent Children
Burnout isnāt just being tired š“ ā itās when your whole body and brain feel completely overwhelmed and worn out. It happens when youāve had to keep going for too long without enough rest, support, or understanding.
Lots of neurodivergent children (especially autistic and ADHD children) experience burnout when the world expects too much, too fast, for too long.
š What Does Burnout Look Like?
Every child is different, but burnout can look like:
š§± Shutting down ā going quiet, hiding, or zoning out
š More meltdowns or emotional overload
š Not enjoying things you usually love
š Feeling numb, flat, or disconnected
š¤ Headaches, stomach aches, or just feeling āoffā
š« Saying ānoā to school or everyday things
š° Big anxiety or fear over small things
Sometimes adults think this is ābad behaviourā ā but itās not. Itās your body asking for help.
š§ Why Does Burnout Happen?
Burnout often builds up over time when kids feel they have to:
š¶ Mask: Pretend theyāre okay when theyāre not
š Cope with too much noise, light, or busy places
š Try to learn in a way that doesnāt suit them
š¬ Hide stims, needs, or feelings to fit in
šāāļø Keep going without enough quiet, calm breaks
š Meet expectations that donāt match their needs
š What Helps?
Burnout is not your fault. You donāt need to try harder ā you need to feel safe, seen, and supported. Hereās what can help:
š Lowering demands ā less pressure and fewer āmustsā
š§ø Rest and calm time ā not as a reward, but as a right
š§ Sensory support ā quiet spaces, headphones, breaks
š£ļø Listening and believing how you feel
š« Adults who help you feel safe being your real self
š Pressing pause on anything thatās too much right now
š¬ One Last Thing
If youāre feeling burnt out, youāre not broken. Youāre doing your best in a world that often forgets to meet you halfway.
You deserve support that fits youĀ ā not the other way around.
