An Introduction to ASN in Scottish Early Years Education A Five-Module CPD Programme for Early Years Educators Course Overview This programme equips early years practitioners with knowledge and skills to effectively support children with Additional Support Needs (ASN). Emphasising play-based learning, family partnership, and inclusive practice, participants learn to create environments where all children thrive. Target Audience Early years practitioners and managers Students in early years education Family support and early intervention professionals Learning Outcomes Participants will: Understand ASN in early years contexts and Scottish legislative framework Conduct developmental observations and assessments Design inclusive environments using Universal Design for Learning Build partnerships with families and multi-agency professionals Implement play-based strategies for diverse needs Programme Structure Module 1: Understanding ASN in Early Years - The Big Picture Statistical context, categories of ASN, and the critical importance of early intervention Module 2: Scotland's Legal and Policy Framework for Early Years ASN Education Act 2004, GIRFEC, UNCRC, and statutory duties in early years settings Module 3: Early Identification and Developmental Assessment Observation skills, assessment tools, collaborative processes, and staged intervention approaches Module 4: Inclusive Early Years Practice and Environmental Design Universal Design for Learning principles, creating accessible environments, and adapting activities Module 5: Family Partnership and Multi-Agency Working in Early Years Family-centred practice, communication strategies, and collaborative professional working
